“And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb,
and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name
JESUS.”
Luke 1:31
Names in the Bible are of great Importance because of the description that they
give. The name will give you insight into the person, what there character is, or if it
is a place it will tell you what is significant.
The name Jesus is not a word that is translated from Greek, that is to say the word is
not replaced with a word or words which mean the same thing. Instead the
translators of the King James Bible chose to transliterate the word, or rather to take
the Greek letters and replace them with the English equivalent. The reasoning why
God would have led the translators to do this may be the importance of whom this
represents. The bible tells us in Acts 4:12 “Neither is there salvation in any other: for
there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be
saved.” If Christ’s name had been translated it would be Joshua which means
Salvation of Jehovah, which indeed he is the God’s salvation for a lost and dying
world. The name Jesus when spoken may bring forth many emotions because this is
the name of God. Matthew 1:23 “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring
forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God
with us.”
There are many names of God found through out the Bible which describes his
character to us. The name Jesus, the salvation of Jehovah, God with us, sums it all
up.
